Sudbury Mining Week has received a makeover, and as of this year, it will be known as Modern Mining & Technology Week Sudbury. The awareness week is from April. 27th to May. 5th, 2013.

May 7, 2009 – Students compete to build Popsicle stick mine shafts – Northern Ontario Business

Greater Sudbury is coming up on a major anniversary: 125 years of mining. It was spring 1884 when a flurry of prospecting activity began in the Sudbury basin. The first mine was established by Thomas Murray on Oct. 1, 1884. The mine would later be sold to H. H. Vivian and Company of Wales. In 1885, prospector Thomas Frood found and opened what would become Copper Cliff Mine. It was the first to ship ore.

Last month, I had the pleasure of participating in the 16th Annual Sudbury Mining Week, not as President and CEO of FNX Mining, but as the event’s Honorary Chairman. It was appropriate to celebrate Mining Week in Canada, and especially in Sudbury – one of the most prolific mining camps in the world.
