Modern Mining & Technology Sudbury (MMTS) is on a mission to excite younger generations about the future of mining through a series of fun and educational events. MMTS is made up of volunteers from diverse industries and backgrounds and has been a part of the community for many years. Through partnerships with the mining industry, government, and educational institutions, MMTS educates and enlightens youth about the many careers that contribute to an innovative and world-class mineral resources sector in Sudbury and Northern Ontario.

 

For 2021, MMTS has developed a virtual version of our popular MineOpportunity Game. Offered in both English and French during the week of May 10-21, 2021. 

 

High school students from Sudbury, Espanola and Manitoulin in grades 9-12 will be provided with a unique experience to dig deep into the world of mineral resources that is fun, engaging,  and educational!!  It is an opportunity for students to work together to answer questions, complete challenges and activities!  Students will answer mining-, engineering-, geology-, environmental-, trades-, and community-related questions, solve math and science problems, complete curriculum-based activities and tackle five live challenges!  

Teams will play to win gifts, the coveted MineOpportunity games trophy, banner to display at their school and cash prizes of up to $5,000 for their school!

 

Teachers who wish to engage their students in this virtual challenge are asked to register their teams by clicking on this registration link:

1st Place - $5,000*  Trophy & banner to keep at school.

Each participating student will receive 2 passes to Dynamic Earth or Science North and a $50 Amazon Gift certificate.


2nd place - $2,500

Each participating student will receive 2 passes to DE or Science North and a $25 Amazon Gift Certificate.


3rd place - $1,000*

Each participating student will receive 2 passes to DE or Science North. 

* Financial Winnings are awarded to the school with restrictions on spending for mining, exploration and earth sciences related educational materials, content or activities. Any purchases or experiences acquired with winnings are requested to be recorded and published on social media and MMTS is to be tagged in these posts. 

  • The Virtual MineOpportunity competition is open to French, English, Public and Catholic School Boards in Greater Sudbury, Espanola and Manitoulin. English and French teams are competing for the same prizes. Competition materials will be available in English & French. Answers to questions and activities can be completed in either language. Please note: Some websites may not have a french version available.

  • Student team members must be from the same school, registered as full-time,  in grades 9, 10, 11, or 12.  

  • Teams must have a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 10 participants. 

  • A maximum of 4 teams/school can register for the competition. 

  • Each team must have one assigned teacher leader. It is preferable, but not required, that each team from the same school have a different teacher as lead. 

  • Limited capacity. We are accepting a maximum of 20 teams for the 2021 competition. Teams will be selected on a first come, first serve basis.

Pre-Game Teacher Information Package

 

A pre-game orientation package will be sent to lead teachers of participating teams on May 3rd, 2021.

 

This package will contain: 

 

  • The lead teacher’s roles. 

  • The object of the game.

  • A description of the game LMS platform. 

  • Instructions for the team on how to design a team logo and pick a team name. 

  • A list of equipment needed.

  • Health and safety guidelines.

  • Game timeline and important dates. 

  • A parent waiver form for the release of pictures taken of students that are submitted as part of the game.  

 


Team Information Package 

 

A team information package will be sent to teachers to share with their teams on May 10th, 2021 at 8am. 

 

This package will contain:

 

  • The object of the game. 

  • Game rules.

  • Information on how to log in to the LMS game platform and create a profile.

  • A list of equipment needed.

  • Health and safety guidelines.

  • Game timeline and important dates. 

  • A list of questions, activities & live challenges.
